Because of the idea that “society does not support teenage pregnancy”, teen parents aren’t given the resources they need to carry a successful life for them and for their children (Krueger, 85).
According to Stephan Dunay, a writer for Sex, Etc., if you ask any young person they would say that they, “wish that their parents were more deeply involved in their lives” (Krueger, 69).
Because teens have so much access to technology and the media, things such as television display sexual content, “increasing the likelihood of teen pregnancy” (Krueger, 64).
Not only does television display the sexual content to teens but it doesn’t or rarely, “highlights the negative aspects of sex or the risks and responsibilities” (Krueger, 65).
The negatives and hardships of teenage pregnancy according to teen moms can be reduced community support and, “ takes a lot of weight off their shoulders” (Krueger, 123).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting is a book that includes a range from what factors contribute to teen pregnancy to how teen parents are not given enough credit. Community support is helpful but awareness and consequences at school and home are not emphasized.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Editor: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the editor.

The editor of the book is Lisa Krueger and includes many other credible authors that have done their own work.

Attachment: Does the author or editor have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative?

This book was written for informative purposes.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I detect a slight bias in some areas of the book regarding that teen parents are not given enough credit and in others that teens are not prepared the consequences and sacrifices of parenthood.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author does cite references, adding to the credibility of the writing.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I plan to use this source as a form of counter argument regarding my position that teen pregnancy should be reduced and the awareness should be emphasized.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: After having known Edward for just a few short months, Bella admits that “it would cause [her] physical pain to be separated from him now" (Meyer 283).
In one of the chapters written by Jasmine Miller she states, “Teen moms now go to school, get jobs, get married and, like other people of any age, grow into their parenting role” (Ojeda, 33).
Miller argues that times have changed since teen pregnancy became an issue and that, “young parents can lead productive, educated lives, even with the burden of an early pregnancy” (Ojeda, 33).
Margaret McKinnon, a dean at University of Regina and a contributor to a program that helps teen moms get back on their feet, argues that, “without many alternatives in life, having a baby can have a lot of good sense” (Ojeda, 37).
Shannon, a teen mom of two boys, says, “motherhood was an inspiration” and “she couldn’t picture her life without them” (Ojeda, 41).
Janine Jackson believes that the media exaggerates the problem of teenage pregnancy and that the idea of, “children have children” or even “babies having babies” is derogatory and that teens must be incapable of making decisions (Ojeda, 31).

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Teenage Pregnancy Opposing Views includes a variety of viewpoints from different authors regarding teen pregnancy. Some authors believe that teens are not given enough credibility at home and in their school lives and are in a way degraded for their actions. Others believe that options such as adoption and abortion should not be available to expecting teen mothers and that the numbers of teen pregnancy should be reduced.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Editor: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the editor.

The editor of the book is Auriana Ojeda but has many different authors for sections and topics in each chapter. Some of the authors are very credible sources for example Jasmine Miller refers to a dean of a University whose job is to help teen mothers.

Attachment: Does the author or editor have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative?

This book was written for informative purposes.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I detect a slight bias, only because the book is called Opposing Viewpoints regarding teen pregnancy.

Senior Project Interview

1. What does this topic mean to you?
That teens are not as aware as they should be. They don't know much about prevention and there isn't much communication with the parents.

2. How are you connected to this topic?
My daughter experienced it

3. Do you have first-hand experience with the topic?
No

4. How long have you been connected with/affected by this topic?
One year

5. Do you think this is a serious problem, or something that can be put off?
It depends on the circumstances. Family support is very important and can make all the difference.

6. What are your thoughts on how to improve the problem?
There should be school involvement and more parents should talk with thier child.

7. What are your thoughts on the opposing views?
As a parent, we are all against teenage pregnancy because we want the best for our child. If you could talk to your child as much as possible and make it preventable, why wouldn't you.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Many teens tend to have not reached a high level of maturity and because of “fluctuating hormones” a teen mom may experience depression.
Like all pregnancies, teens are also expected to receive prenatal care because they may experience complications such as “anemia, toxemia, high blood pressure, placenta previa and premature birth”.
A pregnant teen’s life will be dramatically changed due to sacrifices including delayed, “education and goals for the future”.
The article states that, “A teen may not be an adequate mother” due to the fact that they cannot provide it with the undivided attention that the baby requires.
The author states that any teenage pregnancy will be, “a challenge” due to the fact that they lack the patience, maturity and ability to handle stress.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
All teenage pregnancies according to the article will not result to be simple due to the fact that teenagers suffer emotionally, medically, educationally and in many other forms. The adolescent is still developing in their body and maturing in their minds.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author is Julia Bodeeb and from the article I cannot point out any background training she has had.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

The author is writing this article for LIVESTRONG, an organization which clearly seeks to give the best help and aid to the public. This article specifically was intended for teenagers and to provide them with the realities of pregnancy.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I do detect a bias throughout this article because it clearly states at the beginning that teenage pregnancy is a challenge and goes on to list the reasons why. No where does it state that a teenager may be capable of providing a secure home for their child and doing so with simplicity.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author does use references to other sites and refers to a study organization for support. This does help make the article that much more credible because it uses facts from research.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan to use this source in my project to describe more in detail the consequences that teenage mothers are likely to experience. I will also use it as another source that does not list any of the pros to adolescent pregnancy.

EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
Surprisingly, statistics show that, “85% of teen pregnancies are unplanned” meaning that 15% of them are.
The biggest advice that this article can give is that expecting teen mothers should receive prenatal care because it is the “biggest risk” they can take when expecting.
Refusal to receive prenatal care is not foreign to teens and because of “fear about telling others of pregnancy”, it is offered at free or low cost in most states.
Prenatal care for expecting teens is crucial because the teenage body is still “growing and will need more nutritional support to meet the needs of her and her baby”.
The use of alcohol and drugs may result in premature birth, which may also result in “brain damage and physical disabilities”.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Teens are urged to receive prenatal care when they are expecting regardless of embarrassment of others knowing of their pregnancy. This is recommended immediately because the adolescent body is still developing and growing and needs more medical attention. Prenatal care is offered in many places for little to no cost.
Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author is Robin Elise Weiss and no training is listed or apparent. The author simply gives information of the teenage body that is helpful to pregnant teens that could possibly lessen the difficulty of living as a teenage mom.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

This article is simply informative purposes of keeping a healthy body when expecting.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?

I don’t detect a bias in the author’s writing because he does provide a counterargument that there is some sort of relief if you are an expecting teen. However, I do detect a bit of bias in the site itself because there are links for other site that don’t relate to any pros of teenage pregnancy.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The author uses medically proved results of the teenage body to make his argument more credible.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I will use this source in my project to help the idea that teens are not only unprepared to have a child but they are also unfamiliar with their own bodies which could be a sign of immaturity and could affect their parenting skills in the future.

EX: The article cites Maria Nikolajeva, a professor of at Cambridge, as saying that Bella does not "in any way promote independent thinking or personal development" in women, instead portraying a woman "meek and willing to do anything for her vampire boyfriend" (POV).
The signs if a teenager is pregnant are the same as any other woman of any age except that adolescents may react in “fear or shame”.
Knowing if an adolescent is pregnant is one of the most important parts of pregnancy because poorly looked after prenatal care is one of the, “major causes in pregnancy” among girls who are between the age of 15 and 19.
Symptoms of teenage pregnancy can be easily confused with a female’s period except that one may experience, “morning sickness and frequent urination”.
When taking a pregnancy test, teens should know that results may be incorrect due to the fact that tests may not work until “one week after a missed period”.
Teens should also know that if they may be pregnant, they may not be able to track symptoms until about “two weeks after a missed period”.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

This page brings together the most common symptoms that woman have felt when believing that they may be pregnant. Although only a few are listed, woman and adolescents should trust their instincts even if no symptoms are obvious. Teens especially may vary with these symptoms but should make sure that as soon as they believe they may be pregnant to begin prenatal care to prevent any further complications with their pregnancy.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
There is no author for this site. Its main purpose is to serve as helpful guidance to teens who believe they may be pregnant by providing them with the most common symptoms.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

There is no apparent goal of this site but to provide teens with detailed pregnancy symptoms.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
I do not detect any bias in this article. It simply gives medical information.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?

The site does not use any other uses of reference.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I plan to use this source to show that teens may easily be unaware or confused of a pregnancy when compared to their period.
